Born in Ghana and raised in South Africa, I am a Pan-African at heart who is passionate about building homegrown solutions to the continent’s most pressing development challenges” Says Nthabiseng Mosia – who was inspired to pursue a Masters in Energy Finance and Policy at Columbia University in 2014, where she then met her co-founders for Easy Solar. Her travels in Africa and her own personal experiences from childhood of multiple power outages, proved that many Africans (two thirds, in fact) lack access to stable and reliable electricity – and are still using both toxic as well as expensive substitutes. She was then inspired to create better alternatives for small households and businesses across Sierra Leone, from small lanterns – which would in turn help save approximately $250 over the product’s lifetime – to basic home solar systems, which helps save approximately $900; providing some households with electricity for the very first time.
