Uganda-Qatar Tourism Partnership Takes Off

Uganda’s tourism sector is experiencing a significant boost thanks to a strategic partnership with Qatar, marked by the successful Uganda Tourism and Cultural Expo 2025 held in Doha. This landmark event signals exciting new opportunities for African travel agents seeking to tap into the lucrative Gulf travel market.

The Expo, hosted by the Ugandan Embassy in Qatar, drew over 200 participants, including key players from both nations’ travel industries. More than 50 Qatari travel agents and tour operators connected directly with 25 Ugandan Destination Management Companies (DMCs) during focused B2B sessions. This direct engagement facilitated product pitching and fostered promising collaborations, laying the groundwork for long-term partnerships.

Uganda’s diverse tourism offerings took center stage, with presentations highlighting iconic attractions such as gorilla trekking, white-water rafting, and cultural heritage sites. A vibrant cultural showcase featuring Ugandan crafts, textiles, and culinary experiences further immersed attendees in the country’s unique identity. High-ranking officials from both countries underscored the importance of tourism for economic development and reinforced their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation.

This partnership comes at an opportune time. Outbound travel from Qatar is booming, with a projected 65% increase in 2023 and a growing appetite for unique international experiences. While popular destinations for Qatari travelers typically include European and other Gulf countries, there’s increasing interest in African destinations like Morocco, Egypt, and South Africa. Uganda is now strategically positioned to capture a share of this expanding market.

For African travel agents, this collaboration presents several key advantages:

Access to a High-Value Market: Qatari travelers are known for seeking luxury and experiential travel, aligning with Uganda’s focus on high-end tourism offerings. The average revenue per user in Qatar’s travel market is estimated at nearly USD 600 in 2024, indicating significant spending potential.

Enhanced Connectivity: Qatar Airways offers up to eight direct flights per week between Doha and Entebbe, with a flight duration of approximately five and a half hours. This convenient access makes Uganda an attractive option for Qatari travelers.

Improved Infrastructure: Uganda has invested heavily in upgrading its tourism infrastructure, including road improvements to national parks, new high-end hotels, and the expansion of Entebbe International Airport. These developments enhance the overall visitor experience and create a more appealing destination for international travelers.

The Uganda-Qatar partnership reflects a broader trend of successful tourism collaborations between Gulf states and African nations. Similar initiatives involving the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and other GCC countries have demonstrated the potential for mutual growth and development through joint marketing, investment, and enhanced air connectivity.

Uganda’s proactive approach, combined with Qatar’s growing outbound travel market, creates a fertile ground for African travel agents to expand their businesses. By leveraging this partnership and promoting Uganda’s unique attractions, agents can tap into a new stream of high-value travelers and contribute to the continued growth of Africa’s tourism sector.
