The EnviroServ Waste Management team in Nelson Mandela Bay opened its doors on Thursday, October 26, to host stakeholders adjacent to the Aloes Waste Management Facility for a day of learning and discovery about waste.
The annual open day aims at creating environmental awareness and educating the communities living in the surrounds about what responsible waste management entails.
The event, which saw presentations from various staff members, was well attended by schools, community leaders, and organisations from various sectors.
One of the highlights of the day was when beneficiaries of EnviroServ’s Corporate Social Responsibility programme shared their experiences.
Sinazo Frans detailed how she applied to EnviroServ for funding, and how overjoyed she was to be granted the Enterprise Development funding.
“I run a business where we cut and prepare vegetables; we were doing this in my backyard, and with the funding we bought a Wendy’s house,” said Frans.

Nomatshawe Bunde of Nwamanzi echoed the same sentiments as Frans as she expressed her gratitude to EnviroServ for an Enterprise Development grant.
“We received a grant of R40 000 from EnviroServ, and not only that, we are now a water supplier for the company.”
Deputy Principal of Vulumzi Secondary School, Nono Quza, expressed the school’s gratitude for the support received from EnviroServ, saying the school had gone from strength to strength.
“With EnviroServ’s funding for study camps, the school’s matric results have improved drastically, from 39 percent to 81,9 percent in 2022.”
After all the presentations, a visit to the Aloes Laboratory with manager Nandi Ndika was conducted, followed by a site tour with site manager Sue Alcock. Makgabo van Niekerk, EnviroServ’s public affairs manager, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to responsible waste management and support for the communities in which it operates.
