Shehu Usman Mai-Bornu, who hails from Yola South Local Government Area of Adamawa State, was born in Lagos on December 3, 1964. He joined the NNDC in 1993 as a Manager (Finance & Accounts) and holds a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Accountancy obtained from the University of Maiduguri in 1985 and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Ahmadu Bello University in 2000.
He is a member of the Nigeria Institute of Management (Chartered) and the Institute of Directors.
Prior to joining NNDC, Mai-Bornu started his full working career at Nortex Nigeria Limited, Kaduna in 1986, and later moved to the Nigerian Agricultural & Cooperative Bank Limited (now Bank of Agriculture Limited) in 1987 as a Finance Officer, serving in the Finance Department at the Corporate Headquarters and Bauchi Area Office respectively. He also served as an Assistant Manager in the Inspection Department at the Corporate Headquarters of the Bank.
Mal. Mai-Bornu started his full working career at Nortex Nigeria Limited, Kaduna in 1986, and later moved to the Nigerian Agricultural & Cooperative Bank Limited (now Bank of Agriculture Limited) in 1987 serving in the Finance and Inspection Departments at the Corporate Headquarters of the Bank as well as at the Bauchi Area Office.
During the period of his employment at the NNDC he held various management positions (both at the Corporate Headquarters and its subsidiary companies) including Assistant General Manager (Group Internal Audit); Assistant General Manager (Telecommunications & IT); Deputy General Manager (Finance & Accounts), and Deputy General Manager (Planning & Corporate Development) at the Corporate Headquarters. At NNDC subsidiary companies, he has served as Deputy General Manager (Finance & Administration) at Drake & Scull (Nigeria) Limited; Assistant General Manager (Corporate Services) at NNIL Commercial Company Limited; Director (Finance & Investments) at Arewa Hotels (Developments) Limited; and acting Managing Director, New Capital Properties Limited.
He has represented NNDC as a nominee director on the boards of various companies such as of Zamfara Textile Industries Limited, New Nigeria Construction Company; Nigerian Beverages Production Company Limited), Newdevco Investments & Securities Company Limited. He currently serves on the Boards of Northern Cable Processing & Manufacturing Company Limited, Arewa Suites Limited, NNIL Commercial Company Limited, New Capital Properties Limited and NLPC Pension Fund Administrators.
Until his appointment in September 2022 as the substantive Group Managing Director, Shehu Mai-Bornu was the Acting GMD as well as the Head of Business Development & Corporate Planning since January 2019.
He has attended various seminars, conferences and workshops in Nigeria and overseas.
