Jeremiah Thoronka is a remarkable young innovator from Sierra Leone. At just 24 years old, he is the Founder and CEO of Optim Energy, a company focused on climate change and sustainability with a significant social impact. Jeremiah’s journey began during his teenage years when he recognized the detrimental effects of burning charcoal and firewood on health and children’s education in Sierra Leone.

Driven by a passion for renewable energy and climate change, Jeremiah developed a device that transforms vibrations from vehicles and pedestrians into clean, renewable energy. This innovative solution has provided free electricity to numerous households and schools, benefiting thousands of people. His work has earned him several accolades, including being featured in Forbes Africa’s 30 Under 30 list for his contributions to the Climate Change and Sustainability sector.

A Cleaner Future for Africa

Jeremiah first discovered an interest in renewable energy and climate change during his teenage years in Sierra Leone. At that time, burning charcoal and firewood were the only sources of light and heat, and he recognized the impact it had on health and children’s progression.

When Jeremiah was 17, he launched his own start-up called Optim Energy, which transforms vibrations from vehicles and pedestrians into clean renewable energy. During his time studying for an MSc in Sustainability, Energy, and Development at Durham, Jeremiah won the first Chegg.orgGlobal Student Prize for a device he developed using kinetic energy from traffic and pedestrians to combat energy poverty. Two of the devices provided free electricity to 150 households (1,500 citizens) and 15 schools (9,000 students).
