Deribie Asfaw is a CEO of Cooperative Bank of Oromia, a bank where the majority of shareholding is owned by cooperatives and farmers. Before taking on his current position, Deribie worked as a Vice President at Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, in Customer Account and Transaction Services.
Using his more than 23 years of experience in the industry, he has also brought an exponential growth to the Coop-bank and immense success in providing access to finance to unbanked and under-banked population of the country. It is under his leadership that the bank has managed to acquire about 10 million customers starting from just four hundred twenty thousand back in 2015. In the same token, the asset of the bank that was just ETB 11.46 billion in 2015 has grown to a staggering ETB 127 billion where only a few banks in the country managed to surpass the ETB 100 billion mark.
Currently, Coop-bank is a major supporter of agricultural sector and has a unique business model to support cooperatives and farmers. Deribie is also an active board member of mega
institutions: Oromia Insurance, Tumsa Endowment, Kenya Beverages S.co and others.
