Senegal claimed the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title in a night of extraordinary drama in Rabat, outlasting hosts Morocco 1-0 after extra time in a final that spiralled into chaos and controversy.
The defining moment came in stoppage time of normal play when referee Jean-Jacques Ndala awarded Morocco a penalty after a VAR review, provoking fierce protests from the Senegalese side. In an unprecedented scene, Senegal’s players briefly walked off the pitch in protest, leaving fans, officials and security personnel stunned.
After a 14-minute delay, Senegal’s captain and talisman Sadio Mané persuaded his teammates to return, allowing the match to continue. Morocco’s Brahim Díaz stepped up with the chance to win it, but his audacious Panenka-style penalty was comfortably saved by Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy — a miss that shifted the momentum entirely.
In the early minutes of extra time, Pape Gueye scored the decisive goal, firing Senegal into the lead and ultimately securing the championship for the Lions of Teranga — their second AFCON title after winning in 2021.
The final’s turbulent end will likely live longer in memory than the narrow scoreline. Controversial decisions, fan unrest and the walk-off protest have already sparked debate across the continent, with Moroccan coach Walid Regragui calling the scenes “shameful” and critics warning of broader implications for African football’s image.
Senegal’s triumph, however, remains historic: they stood firm in adversity to bring home the coveted trophy, reaffirming their place among Africa’s elite sides.
