Segun Ogunsanya

CEO, Airtel Africa

Segun Ogunsanya is the Chief Executive Officer of Airtel Africa Plc, a leading telecommunications provider with operations across 14 Sub-Saharan African countries. Prior to this role, he served as Managing Director and CEO of Airtel Nigeria, one of the company’s largest subsidiaries.

Education

Ogunsanya earned a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) in 1987. He is also a Chartered Accountant, accredited by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria.

Career Journey

  • Coca-Cola: Began his international leadership career in 1999 as General Manager and CEO of Coca-Cola Ghana, later becoming CEO of Coca-Cola Sabco in Kenya in 2010.

  • Banking: Served as Managing Director and Head of Retail Banking Operations at Ecobank Transnational Inc. between 2008 and 2009.

  • Nigerian Bottling Company Plc: Held the position of Managing Director from September 2011 to December 2012.

  • Airtel Nigeria: Appointed CEO in November 2012, where he successfully steered the company’s growth in one of Africa’s most competitive telecom markets.

Leadership at Airtel Africa

In April 2021, Ogunsanya was named the designated CEO of Airtel Africa Plc, officially assuming the role on 1 October 2021. He succeeded Raghu Mandava, who retired after leading the company’s expansion across the continent. Ogunsanya’s appointment marked a strategic transition, with C. Surendran taking over as CEO of Airtel Nigeria from August 2021.
